Breast augmentation has come a long way over the years, both medically and socially. Breast augmentation is now considered a fairly simple—even “routine”—surgery and breast enhancement for personal preference is more socially accepted than ever before. However, there are many things you should consider before making the decision to go through with the operation.

First, it is important that you examine your motives for wanting a breast augmentation. Even though the operation is considered to be a routine procedure in the medical field, it is still a surgery and the decision to go through with it should be well thought out. Younger women who are still developing may feel impatient and want breast augmentation surgery to look more mature. This can be a dangerous motive for breast enhancement, as a developing body can be severely hindered if not left to naturally flourish, especially in teenagers. If you require a bit of reconstruction or are dissatisfied with the shape, size, or symmetry of your breasts, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. The most important thing for you to remember is that this surgery should be done for your own personal benefit. No surgery is without risks and it is your body that will be going through the surgery and recovery. Just make sure it is something you want.

Another item to consider is what kind of results you’re looking for. This, for the most part, will be discussed with you by your doctor, but it’s always a good idea to go to the clinic with a general goal in mind. Do you want to increase your cup size? Perhaps you’re satisfied with your cup size but want a bit of shape or firmness added to your breasts? Many people find that after losing weight or after having a child, their breasts may become soft or slightly less “full” in appearance.
Next comes choosing your doctor. While price is a factor that may impose limits to your choice, you must keep in mind that price is not the only factor to consider when choosing a doctor. Research qualifications and ask your doctor for photos of his previous work. This is always a good idea as you get to see first-hand the quality of your doctor’s ability. And don’t worry about offending your doctor by asking for visual proof of his skill—many surgeons respect the fact that a decision this important requires a lot of research and comparison.

Once you’ve decided on a surgeon, your doctor will discuss with you the types of implants you can choose from. The two main types are silicone and saline. You will also have to decide if you want a smooth or textured implant and what shape you want your implant to be. The best you can do is research for yourself and ask your doctor for any recommendations. You want your results to reflect your preference.

Lastly, you must realize that you will have to go through a certain amount of recovery, and you should prepare to rearrange your schedule around this. You will want to make sure that you can depend on someone to act as a caregiver for a while until your doctor gives the okay to return to everyday life.
Breast augmentation is a lot to consider, but if it’s something you truly want, research, plan, and prepare—and enjoy your results!

Recently, silicone was deemed safe by the FDA, stating that silicone has not been reasonably linked to cancer or disease. They also concluded that the risks involved with a silicone type breast implant are clearly noted and are discussed between a woman and her doctor before the surgery. Janet Puskas is not convinced that silicone should be the only option, however, and is ready to begin work on the new biorubber design. If approved, the studies would begin by testing the properties of the prototype. Soon, the material would be tested in lab studies and on animals, with the future goal being clinical studies.

Even as technology and medicine develop, invasive procedures such as breast enhancement will probably never be without risk. But, as Ms. Puskas hopes, the chances of unsatisfactory results may be greatly reduced in time.
