Before & After Breast Augmentation
You’ve done your research, found a doctor and set your breast augmentation appointment. Now what? It’s perfectly normal to have jitters about any upcoming surgery. As with any major life event, most of your nerves may stem from a simple fear of the unknown. Having a “game plan†in mind for before and after your breast augmentation may slow those butterflies doing a jig in your stomach. Here is a guideline to help you get started:
Pre-surgery
• Be sure you have a very open relationship with your surgeon. Don’t be afraid to ask him any and all of your questions. Things to discuss include: Are my prescriptions okay to take during surgery? What kind of herbal supplements or medications can I take to ease post-surgery swelling and discomfort? Will my period interfere with the surgery? And always inform him about any preexisting heart conditions, eating disorders, blood pressure issues, etc. before your procedure begins. If you have not already, you need to quit smoking as soon as possible. Smoking can inhibit oxygen levels in your blood and interfere with proper healing.
• Be confident with the size of breast implant you choose! You don’t want to be hesitant about your new bust size. Your surgeon will have a good idea of what will work best for you, so take heed his advice. Another thing you can do is “practice†your breast enhancement. Buy a bra that is your post-augmentation size and wear it stuffed. This will give you an idea of your new look and confidence in your implant choice.
• Be prepared for post-op. Set up a caretaker early so you have time to arrange for a backup if necessary. This person should plan on driving you to and from you procedure, stay with you for one to two nights post-surgery and follow a list of caretaking requirements given to you by your surgeon. Keep your house stocked with post-operative necessities. These include: a soft cup bra to wear in the weeks after your breast augmentation, frozen peas to ease your swelling, canned foods and easy-prepare meals so your work is limited, and snacks to ease post-op nausea.
Post-surgery
• On the way home, make sure your caretaker is aware of how you are feeling. You are going to be very sore and possibly nauseous, so be sure you have a container with you in case you feel like vomiting. Sudden movements in the car may be uncomfortable and increase nausea. Make sure he’s aware of this before the augmentation, as you need to keep talking to a minimum after the procedure.
• Don’t over do it! You may feel ready to take on the world, but breast augmentation recovery is a process. Get plenty of rest, and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Too much too fast may hinder your healing time. Soon, you will be instructed to massage your breasts daily. This will help your newly enlarged breasts become more natural.
• Finally, go to all of your post-op appointments. Your doctor will help you through any difficulties and ensure there are no problems with your breast augmentation. With his expertise and your cooperation, you’ll be enjoying your new self in no time!
